Kitimat, BC at a Glance
Kitimat, BC, is located 50 km (31 mi)
south of Terrace in the Great
Bear Rainforest. The history of this community is tied to that of the Haisla
Aboriginal people, so much so that their original name for the citymeaning
people of the snowhas stuck, although the spelling has changed slightly
from Kitimaat. Industry is what brought many people to this isolated area, while
stunning scenery, a friendly community and an abundance of nature is the reason
most people stayor visit. The city's rich past can be uncovered at the Kitimat
Centennial Museum and the traditions of the Haisla people can be explored
at the Kitimaat
Village. Wildlife is abundant in the surrounding wilderness and ocean, making
Kitimat a prime location for fishing and hunting trips. On a warm summer's day,
the people of Kitimat can often be found at Hospital
Beach, enjoying a picnic and watching the cares of the world drift away with
the tide and the ships.
